Corporations are beginning to incorporate into their hiring packets a new soft skill requirement for corporate executives and key employees, emotional intelligence. High IQ and test scores no longer are the most dominant factors in the hiring practice or running a business. People skills has become a definite plus for chief executive officers to have whether you work for a large corporation or run a small business. Creating an environment that fosters retaining employees, improve production, and developing customer relations is critical to a business success.

The cost to hire and train an employee for a position is expensive. And if you are a small business owner, why lose a customer due to customer relations; social media and word of mouth can kill or build a business. The process of advertising positions, interviewing a prospective employee, completing the hiring and exit paperwork, training, or as a small business owner attract new customers to your services/products, cost money. Leaders who intentionally develop out their emotional intelligence skills has an advantage over their competitors.

A list of ten emotional intelligence traits.

  1. Learn how to be yourself. Know why you do the things you do.

  2. Know how to fit in. Be a great listener.

  3. How can you get the best out of others? Be open, all ideas are not wrong. A new idea can be another way to solve an old problem differently.

  4. Make your team feel inclusive. Solve problems in ways that work for everyone.

  5. Be empathetic. Communicate effectively-develop the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.

  6. Be able to take disappointment without getting discouraged. Develop the ability to accept criticism and responsibility.

  7. Be intentional when dealing with unconscious bias. Develop the ability to avoid conflicts and confrontations. Learn how to say no.

  8. How do you respond in challenging times? Learn to accept your mistakes and move on.

  9. Be socially aware of everyone. Develop out your self-awareness. Learn to share your feelings with others.

  10. Manage relationships. Learn to regulate your emotions and move past a bad response from others.

Intentionally learning to reshape a negative response into a positive response will create an effective productive work environment and a positive customer experience.
